Critical Issue: Providing Professional Development for Effective Technology Use

This site has a section called critical Issues for professional development in technology.  This site is awesome.  It lists problems with current school districts inservices, which sounded like what we do in Mukwonago.  Then it goes on to address goals and objectives that need to be covered and followed up on in each in-service.  From here it gives a timeline of how you want to do to plan and implement your in-service.   It clearly states what the roles of each parrty involved should be including teachers, administration, and technology staff.  This page also offers ideas for different group work and training stategies to use during the in-services.  A nice added bonus is that there are a ton of links in all of the areas for more information. This is page worth reading and using.

Below is a Administrative Software Evaluation Form -

I think that although this is listed as a form for administrative software - it could be used for any type of software.  I think it is very vauge.  I feel that there seems to be little asked about where this sofware is coming from, where is it being used successfully and the benefits it will bring to the district.  In fact, this form doesn't make mention of cost either.  I uess I have seen man pieces of software purchased and then brushed aside - I need people to do a little more leg work - I need a list of how  this piece will help specifically will it educate us, will it make things more efficent, will we be able to eliminate several other older pieces of software......  I guess there needs to be documentation that someone can bring up in a year and check on how people are using the software and is it working.  I do like that part of the form is filled out with a Technology Network Manager together.

District Technology Plan Evaluation

Introduction

·        This document has a clear introduction stating the districts mission and six specific goals.

·        I did not feel as though they did a ton of research – When reading this part it seemed that they may have looked at other plans for help but kept their goals very general.

·        I also did not like how there seemed to be no plan survey what teachers feel is working or what teachers need to know to successfully integrate technology in to the classroom.  This plan seems very top down to me – We will tell you what you need to do – not we will work together to make the best happen

·        I would have like to have seen more goals that included all people involved in and have the goal address things in a team fashion.

Background

·        The plan does provide the history of the districts technology and implementation

Needs Assessment/Current Status

·        This plan does list previous plans and how they have been changed

·        This plan also lists the EnGauge survey results that the district used to change and create goals for the plan

·        This EnGauge survey was also taken by the staff to assess their needs and strengths

·        This portion of the plan also talks about current curriculum and how it relates to state standards. This section also refers back to the goals and how when new curriculum is written it will include technology integration

·        There is little mention of information resources or learning tools. There is a link and it goes to a page of web pages.  They seem to be pretty general pages and many have been placed there because of need. It is hard to know when no justification is listed

·        There are inventories listed of hardware and software available in the district.

·        I don’t see a very detailed list of telecommunications or technology infrastructure items anywhere. The same goes for networking and connectivity systems.  These items are not detailed anywhere

Goals and Objectives

·        As stated before, the objectives are stated and they are in a logical order based on assessments and needs first and then on to staff development and future assessments.

·        I do feel like this area is lacking in the area of a plan on how the district is going to increase student and staff information and technology literacy – The staff portion continues to be missing.

Implementation Action Plan

·        This section is broken down by each goal or objective.

·        This section is more specific and says what needs to be done, who is going to do it and by when.

·        What I feel like is missing from this section is the “HOW” – How is this going to be done and how will it be assess for success

·        Leaving out the how seems to be a huge piece missing – I am not sure they knew how they were going to do these things maybe

·        It does tell, as stated before, what technology is available

Monitoring Progress and Evaluating the Plan

·        This is a very small part of the plan – They leave the door wide open here.  In the plan it states that each year the plan will be reviewed by a group of people and represented to the board.

·        Again I ask – How will they assess if the goals are being met???? They just state that they would like to be flexible so as to rewrite the plan but no reasons are stated.

Procedures and Policies

·        There is a list of guidelines for gifts of technology but I never found much of what is being asked for by the DPI here.

·        The only area where there was more detailed guidelines was in the library plan.  This plan was truly geared toward use of library and books

Chapter 4 Summary

This chapter focuses on the use of computers for administrative purposes.  This is truly something that saves time and is much more efficient for all involved.  In a time with classroom populations on the rise and everyone excepting things to happen in a quick fashion computers in administration in schools was inevitable.  When I started teaching in my district teachers in the classroom only used email to communicate with those in the office or anyone outside of their classroom.  This was a good use of technology but there was still much room for growth in the area of technology utilization.  Just recently, my school district starting using a program called Infinite Campus.  This program now gives classroom teachers accesses to student data bases.  With this access teachers are able to create check of sheets, schedules and seating charts in flash where in the past these tasks would take quite a bit of time.  We also know enter all of our attendance and lunch count directly into the computer. In the past, teachers would fill out a paper copy of attendance and lunch count and then the office staff would complete the task of computer entry.  Now, with the use of Infinite Campus we cut out two steps and save a lot of time. I would have to agree that word processing programs seemed to be used the most but that our district is now coming into current technology times and really utilizing great programs to save time and connect all people involve. One are that I know people are weak in is the area of database use.  Currently, all teachers in my district have access to MS Excel. This is an extremely powerful program. Now that I have had training on the program of MS Excel, I can truly understand how powerful and helpful this program is but I think it is the frightening program for most in our district too.  This is something I think that more of our teachers need training on to better use their time and see how powerful this program can be.

Resource Critique - Technology Planning

Through research I found there to be many resources on technology planning.  Two that I found to be good resources are good for different reasons.

The first site I would like to talk about is called The National Center for Technology Planning.  This site was founded by and run by Dr. Larry Anderson.  This site is an exchange center for technology planning information and other related materials.  I like this site because it offers so many resources.  You can view articles, technology plans at many levels and downloadable planning resources.  This site also offers a blog to review on current technology trend and plans, and it has related blogs as well.  I did however feel that this page was weak in the area of updates.  This site has many out of date links and the site as a whole seems to be neglected.

The other sit I felt was worth mentioning is called Planning for Change and Technology. This site is setup to give step by step instructions and the needed tools to implement change with technology.  This site not only covers the plan and tools needed but it also has links that cover frequently asked questions, community involvement, funding and development planning.  This site seems be a great model to follow and a resource for questions.

Third Technology Review - Appliction of Technology Integration

While searching the web there were many great articles regarding studies done about the integration of technology, but I was having trouble finding great examples and resources.  Then I came upon the Classroom Connect site.  This site was created by the Harcourt Education.  This site has complete online lessons for math, reading/language arts, science and social studies with technology integration.  The site also breaks down the lessons into technology type so if you need to fulfill a particular standard by using a word processing program it is easily found by clicking word processing.  You can use these resources for classrooms with one computer or classrooms that have computers for everyone. These lessons are also aligned with NETS (National Education Technology Standards).  This is a great stepping stone for those that are new to technology and are just starting technology integration for the first time.  There is a fee to use the resources from this site but you can try it for free for 30 days.

Chapter 3 – Summary and Reflection

After reading chapter 3 it is clear that there are some extreme views on computer use in schools.  There is no way that a computer can replace a teacher.  I look at those that are in our masters program who teach online and just the computer can not take their place.  The computer and other technology is truly a tool.  It can break down barriers and bring concepts to light in so many other ways then what we are use to in a non-technology classroom. There are too many other concepts and ideas to be taught that in many cases can’t be taught through technology.  Without a doubt I find technology a necessary tool for every classroom and being a third grade teacher I find my students more than ready to use technology in many ways.

I do find that those students who have more exposure to technology and computers are more confident when it comes to working with technology.  These students in many cases become educators themselves which is a great learning experience.  As a child who grew up in a house with more than one computer and encouraged to use it daily, not only for school work and play time but to create a budget for my babysitting money, I feel I do have more skills and confidence in the area of technology than those who did not have my same opportunity.

I did like the resources this chapter has to offer in planning and purchasing opportunities.  I also found the special needs section very informative.  Unfortunately, I may not think of them when fundraising for technology as there seems to be many rules for them to follow and they seem to have less time than I do to try new things (which seems impossible in itself).  This chapter really showed me that I need to get those groups of teachers involved and offer up my help to them.

Chapters 1 & 2

Chapter 1 really set the book up for me.  I felt I knew what to look forward to and what I was going to learn.  The two chapters combined really focused on what is most important when considering a change or introduction of technology into an educational environment.  Currently I sit on my districts technology planning team and as I read I tried to compare my planning team’s actions and decisions to what I was reading.  What I found was that our group’s facilitator seemed to do many things mentioned in the book.  We were planning with teachers and administrators from many levels along with one of our technology resource staff members.  Where I think we need to change some of our ways is in the time in which we were think we will get this plan done and the input we are using to form our plan.  I think we need to take more time in the planning process and seek input from teachers who are not so passionate about technology.  In chapter 2, I like what the book said about collecting information from many people and that you can’t know everything about everyone but try to get a variety of thoughts and ideas.  The book also stated that you need to keep visiting these people and their ideas throughout the planning, integration and dissemination process.  I agree with this and feel this is something I could bring to my team as a necessary step in our process.

I think this assessment gives a detailed picture of who a person is as a technology user.  I like the break down of each skill.  Knowing strengths of others is a huge asset.  This form may uncover experts in the district that are quiet about their skills but might be will to share or teach others.  This also opens the door to how people may think they are not good with technology but really have great knowledge and experience.  Sometimes people need a boost of confidence and they will open and up and share with others.

The above survey or assessment is just a portion of what was available on the listed web site.  I liked this assessement because it asked what changes do you want made and how are you going about getting these changes accomplished.  I feel like this will hold people responsible for using the correct channels for needs or help and catch holes or places where extra support or training is needed.

This survey is great if you are looking to get a general idea where a large group of people are in terms of technology use and training needs.  I think this would be great if you are planning an inservice and need to  know what to focus on and at what levels.  This would also help a teacher know where their students are when planning to integrate technology into the classroom (making this model for kid friendly)

The Helium website is a place where people can have their writing published even if they are not labeled as an expert in the field they are writing on.  I liked this site because when I was looking for a resource on change I always feel some of the best resources come from people who have lived through each experience.  This site publishes articles on all different topics but they all come from a variety of people who live in a variety of different ways.

One article I read gave back ground on how people dealt with change as children and how these skills evolve over time as we become adults.  Another article I read spoke about change in the work place and the steps necessary to make change easier on all parties involved.  Overall there were eleven articles on change which hit many different aspects of change.  As a reader I was able to rate these articles and make comments on them.  I like this feature because I feel like it will assist other reader when they are researching a certain topic.
